Maharashtra Government approved Hill Station - New Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is also known as the Queen of all Hill Stations. Mahabaleshwar and Panchagani are currently identified as such destinations and declared as eco-sensitive zones where no further development is allowed.

MSRDC has approved New Mahabaleshwar (patan/Koyna) as a hill station.

Mountain Park Project is a part of New Mahabaleshwar, MTDC has started working on the project (New Mahabaleshwar) to replicate the existing hill station of Mahabaleshwar in Satara district. In early 2000, MTDC informed that it has started investing around Rs 7,000 crore for the development of the new project, which is spread across 6000 hectares of land. The new project will extend its current base (Mahabaleshwar) to Patan/Koyna Dam (New Mahabaleshwar). As a part of the phased development of Western Ghat, which has a plethora of historical places, forts and pilgrim centers, MSRDC has initiated the development of the region from New Mahabaleshwar to Koyna backwaters / Patan as New Mahabaleshwar Hill Station. The region has been identified so as to cover the most beautiful natural scenic locations, important historic places and thick green plantations. The climate in the region is pleasant throughout the year with the temperature of the area in the range of 5° C and 28° C. The main advantage of this region is the proximity to metro centers such as Mumbai and Near Mumbai.

Official and experts feel that the tourist inflow to these destinations would continue to increase in new Mahabaleshwar due to development in that region. E.g. the development of New Mahabaleshwar within 5 years would act as substitute for Mahabaleshwar which has reached its carrying capacity.

The ambitious plan will be executed by a separate entity—New Mahabaleshwar Development Company (NMDC)—that will have the public and the private sector participation.MSRDC has been appointed the project's nodal agency. The proposed development of this region is considered while estimating the growth of tourist traffic and tourism projects are proposed and scheduled accordingly in the perspective plan.

Mountain Park has surrounded by the mountain chain of the Western Ghats represents geomorphic features of immense importance with unique biophysical and ecological processes. The site’s high montage forest ecosystems influence the Indian monsoon weather pattern. Moderating the tropical climate of the region, the site presents one of the best examples of the monsoon system on the planet. It also has an exceptionally high level of biological diversity and endemism and is recognized as one of the world’s eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological diversity The UNESCO recognizes Natural World Heritage sites as areas representing pre-eminent spots of biodiversity that must be identified, protected and conserved by a global community. Satara-Chalkewadi-Patan Road is a part of infrastructure development for Wind Energy Projects at Chalkewadi and Vankusawade and is spine road for New Mahabaleshwar hill station project. This road was taken-up by MSRDC for development on B.O.T. Basis and the winding work is going on. 

Near Mumbai-Miraj, Karad-Patan-Chiplun rail corridor on fast track

The costliest plan sanctioned is Rs4,670 crore to double the 467km Near Mumbai-Miraj line. Among the projects is a plan to build a new 112km railway line between Karad and Chiplun at a cost of Rs1,200 crore. Konkan Railway can connect to Mumbai-Bangalore Railway region(South central railway).And Passenger and freight train connect with Mumbai regularly through Konkan railway as well as Mumbai-Near Mumbai-Kolhapur railway track.
